Statement by the African Federation of Operational Research Societies (AFROS)
The African Federation of Operational Research Societies (AFROS) is deeply saddened by the sudden passing of Professor Sanja Petrovic, President of the UK Operational Research Society, during the CyMaEn 2026 Conference held in Tlemcen, Algeria, where she was participating as a plenary speaker. Professor Petrovic was a distinguished scholar and a respected leader in the international Operational Research community. Her dedication to scientific excellence, research, and international academic collaboration has left a lasting contribution to our discipline. Her passing is particularly painful for the African Operational Research community, as she was attending a scientific event organised by the AFROS Algeria Chapter, reflecting the strong bonds of cooperation and friendship that unite Operational Research researchers across continents. On behalf of AFROS, its Executive Committee, member societies, and the wider African Operational Research community, we extend our deepest condolences and heartfelt sympathy to Professor Petrovic’s family, friends, colleagues, and the UK Operational Research Society. We stand in solidarity with our colleagues in the United Kingdom and throughout the international Operational Research community as we mourn this profound loss. May her memory continue to inspire future generations of researchers, and may her family and loved ones find strength and comfort during this difficult time.
